The Great Basin

Lyon County, Nevada (east of Carson City), September 20, 2003

(ain't nowhere,
so don't go there)

View to the west, across US 50 & Carson River, toward Carson City
(backlit by late-afternoon sun)

View to the north, across the same valley
(people are moving in, out here)

View to the south
(those are called "pinyon pines", & have edible nuts)
-- These north-south mountain ranges in Nevada were formed as North America moved west from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, & the Great Basin (between the Sierra-Cascade & Rocky mountains) was stretched & sagged

Also observed: wild horses (through 12X binoculars, braced against a much-needed hiking pole), 1 jeep, 1 jack rabbit
